The clarinet is a musical instrument that is a part of the woodwind family. The name derives from adding the suffix -et (meaning little) to the Italian word clarino (meaning a type of trumpet), as the first clarinets had a strident tone similar to that of a trumpet.

Nata a New York, la cantante jazz e blues Catherine Russell e cresciuta in una famiglia in cui la musica era decisamente di casa. Suo padre, Luis Russell, e stato infatti uno dei pionieri del jazz: pianista e bandleader, fu per molti anni il direttore musicale di Louis Armstrong. Non da meno sua madre, Carline Ray, cantante e bassista che ha suonato con gente come Mary Lou Williams e Wynton Marsalis. Catherine Russell ha passato diversi anni a girare il mondo, suonando e registrando con diverse band rock, blues, jazz, soul e gospel, e con artisti famosi come Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steely Dan, e Cyndi Lauper. Data del 2006 il debutto discografico con l’apprezzato album Cat, seguito, due anni dopo, da Sentimental Streak, lavoro che le e valso, assieme ai consensi entusiastici della critica e al successo commerciale, con l’entrata in varie classifiche di vendita, anche diversi premi, fra i quali l’importante Premio della critica discografica tedesca. In Francia l’album e stato selezionato dall’Academie du Jazz per il Prix du Jazz Vocal 2008. Stella nascente, la cui bellissima voce ricorda le grandi cantanti jazz del passato, Catherine Russell proporra ad Ascona un repertorio di jazz tradizionale e blues e il suo nuovissimo CD, Inside this Heart of Mine, pubblicato da World Village/Harmonia Mundi e in uscita nell’aprile 2010. Nella band, fra gli altri, il noto trombettista Jon-Erik Kellso.

A native New Yorker, jazz and blues singer Catherine Russell was born in a musical family. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a pioneering pianist and bandleader, and he was Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, is an outstanding bassist and vocalist who performed with the likes of Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. Catherine Russell spent many years touring the world, performing and recording with rock, blues, jazz, soul, and gospel bands, in addition to famous artists such as Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steely Dan, and Cyndi Lauper. In 2006 she released her debut album, Cat, which garnered the praise of critics and won her many new fans, followed two years later by Sentimental Streak, which received universal acclaim, reaching many bestselling charts and winning several international awards, including the prestigious German Record Critics’ Award in the Jazz category. The Academie du Jazz in France also selected Sentimental Streak as finalist for the Prix du Jazz Vocal 2008. In Ascona for the first time, rising star Catherine Russell will perform a traditional jazz and blues repertoire, presenting her most recent album, Inside this Heart of Mine, scheduled to release by World Village/Harmonia Mundi in April 2010. For this show, famous alumni including Danilo Perez, David Sanchez, Claudio Roditi, Flora Purim, Airto and Steve Turre joined them.
